Event Details

Main Street Players concludes their 20th anniversary season with Foxfire, a heartwarming tale filled with memorable music!

The story centers on Annie Nations, an aging woman who resides in a farmhouse in Southern Appalachia. Annie's husband Hector has passed away, but he continues to maintain an active place in Annie's mind and memory. Annie is eager to keep the farmhouse going on her own, but real estate agent Prince Carpenter has made her a generous offer for the place (with hopes of turning it into a mountaintop development). Additionally, Annie's son Dillard – a professional musician whose wife has just left him – needs Annie to help watch his children. As the tale unfolds, enhanced by revealing flashbacks and inventive interludes, a profoundly beautiful love story emerges.

Foxfire was written by Susan Cooper and Hume Cronyn, with songs by Jonathan Brielle. Cronyn appeared in the 1982 Broadway production of the show alongside his real-life wife Jessica Tandy, with Keith Carradine as Dillard performing the bulk of the show's songs. The play was well-received by critics and audiences alike, with Tandy's performance in particular earning high praise: the actress won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play, and the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. The production was later adapted as a TV movie starring Tandy and Cronyn, for which Tandy won an Emmy Award.

Main Street's production stars Norma Richardson (who is also the theatre's artistic director) and Steve Martin as Annie and Hector, with Emory Schroeter as Dillard and Reese Breedlove as Prince Carpenter. Filling out the cast are Elise Wright as Holly Burrell, and Gary Alexander as Doctor. The play is directed by Marian Sorensen, who has maintained a regular presence at Main Street both on and off the stage (most recently, she helmed the theatre's production of Now and Then). Eric Baker serves as music director, with Janice Aiken as stage manager. The ambitious scenic design is provided by BJ Hughes, with the assistance of master carpenter Frank Danby. The production also features lighting design by Nate Barnes, costume design by Norma Richardson, and sound design by Curtis Brown.

Foxfire will run Wednesday, June 15th through Sunday, June  26th. Wednesday-Saturday performances are at 7:30 PM, with Sunday matinee performances at 3:00 PM.
