Idea Symposium Singled out No Longer

Raising a child is an enormous undertaking, even more so when a parent does so without a partner.  While some see single-parent families as a problem for the rest of society, they are not.  Rather, they face challenges that the general public too often chooses to ignore and minimize.  Recognizing that Georgia has the 4^th highest percentage of single-parent households among the 50 states and the District of Columbia and that almost half of the families with children in Spalding County are single-parent families, we chose single parenting to be the focus of our third IDEA Symposium, a professional learning conference presented by the University of Georgia’s Franklin College of Arts & Sciences at the UGA Griffin Campus.

 At the symposium, attendees will learn about the challenges and rewards of solo parenting, misconceptions about single-parent families, the strategies and resources that solo parents can call upon, and how we can help these single parents.  Just because they are single parents does not mean that they have to be alone.
