CULTURE

Over the past five years, Griffin and Spalding County have been growing into a community for the arts, from ballet to choral music, and from drama to fine arts and crafts. The Griffin Area Arts Alliance is an umbrella organization the arts and was a catalyst in restoring the Griffin Auditorium. The 1100 seat facility is the scene of the Griffin Community Concert Association’s yearly concert series, the Griffin Ballet Theatre productions, and many other performers and organizations.

The Concert Association brings four internationally known guest artists to the Griffin area each year; the ballet offers a first-rate annual production of The Nutcracker and other fine performance.

The area’s two theatre groups, Camelot Theatre Company and the Main Street Players, provide first-class productions showcasing the talents of our local residents. Camelot Kids is the children’s arm of the performing arts allowing young hopefuls to express their creativeness and talents on stage.

The Griffin-Spalding Art Association provides opportunities for local artists to network with each other, take classes, and show and sell their work in the Art Gallery located in the Griffin Welcome Center in downtown Griffin. The Art Association also funds a college art scholarship for a local graduating high school senior.

Music and choral enthusiasts also enjoy participating, performing in and attending programs sponsored by the Griffin Music Club. The Music Club provides free programs for the community and college scholarships and sponsors the Junior Music Festival each March.

Several annual events are the subject of excitement for weeks in advance, drawing families from many communities far and wide. The Kiwanis Spalding County Fair is held each October and attracts both the young and the young at heart to enjoy the excitement of the midway rides and games with all their lights and sounds.

The last weekend in April also welcomes another major attraction. The Annual Iris City Arts and Crafts Festival, sponsored by the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce, brings a variety of quality artists and craftsmen to participate in the festival. Top local entertainment is provided during the two-day event held in the shady surroundings of City Park. Local clubs and organizations take advantage of the Festival to raise funds that are channeled back into the community for charitable programs and projects. Children can enjoy games, and friends and families can enjoy good food and renew and establish friendships in a relaxed atmosphere. This is an activity that brings the Griffin-Spalding community together for fun-filled excitement and heartwarming pride.

The Chamber of Commerce also sponsors the Annual Christmas Parade to usher in the Holiday Season.

The Griffin Downtown Council sponsors downtown events, street dances, and movies, Christmas Open House and many other activities to showcase the completed phases of our Main Street City’s Streetscape program and the unique architecture of the historic downtown.

Great and growing! Experience why this is true of our community. You are sure to find a great neighborhood to live in, a great school for your child and great activities to enjoy year round. Griffin-Spalding is growing because newcomers and business executives find our community is the place to live for these reasons and many, many more.
